About this Event
Filipinxs/as/os have been in Canada for decades but why are we still invisible? The issues of Filipinx/a/o labour, immigration, solidarity with other community members, lack of representation, language and cultural competency had been illuminated in the past months due to COVID-19 and our neighbours’ reliance on our community. While our kababayan represent the fourth largest immigrant group in Canada, and we are highly represented in essential roles in healthcare and the service industry, our kababayan, especially Pinays and Pinxys are not represented in positions of formal leadership influencing decisions that impact them based on their gender, race, and immigration status.
The contribution of our kababayan is paramount to the wellbeing of our second home, Canada, and we need to find solutions and clear pathways to establishing our community members as leaders, not merely as servants to the country's economic development.
Join us as we learn about our collective history in Western Canada, why we’re here, how far we've come, what COVID-19 exposed, how we can be better kapwa, and ideas on moving forward as we settle into the next phase of this pandemic.
Our panelists are from BC and Alberta. See their bios below.
Moderator - Charlene Sayo (she/her)
Darla Tomeldan (she/her)
Francia Bodoso (she/her)
Jaqs Gallos Aquines (she/they/siya)
Laarni Bernardo (she/her)
nelli Agbulos (she/they)

The panelists will have a discussion, and audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the discussion. This event is open to all, although we prioritize the voices of Filipinas and Filipinxs, having an extra layer of invisibility in a heteropatriarchial society.
The discussion will be facilitated in a mix of Tagalog and English.
An online space for a 30-minute optional chika time will be available for you to unpack with other folks. A link will be sent to the email you registered with before the event ends.
We will be hosting these discussions from the unceded territories of the Coast Salish Peoples as well as the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3 within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. We wish to unpack our role as settlers in whichever various ways and reasons we have arrived here and how we can be better “kapwa” towards the sovereignty and liberation of Black peoples, whom we've had close relations with, as well as Indigenous peoples whose territories we occupy by means of colonial policies set up by Canada. We also acknowledge that our histories as settlers are also marred by colonization and imperialism in our homelands.
